USB - 1 wire adaptor

Postby davidb » Tue Jul 31, 2007 1:08 pm

I was just wondering if the USB adapter is supported, I have the book and all references I see are for the serial adapter. I plan ultimately to move the whole project over to TINI weather server.

Thanks

Using the USB Adapter

Postby tbitson » Wed Aug 01, 2007 1:26 pm

David,

Yes, the book focuses on the serial adapter. This is mostly because it works on all OSs. Windows 2000/XP users have reported good sucess using the USB 1-Wire adapter (the DS9490). Go to the weathertoys.net website and click on the News link. Toward the bottom of the list are the installation instructions. Be sure to read the update note at the end of the posting.

USB versus Serial

Postby Esor » Mon Sep 08, 2008 6:27 am

Hi,

I started my project using the USB adapter, and it functions without problems for the project.

BUT BUT BUT, USB adapters for datalogging is not stable enough, I have lerned from my Danish Vantage Pro friends, that they ALL have shiftet from USB to Serial.

I have now done the same, problem is that the USB port randomly disappear, and no data is logged, until the program is stopped, and the USB plug is removed and reinserted.

This is a general WINDOWS problem.

I have now been running with my Serial adapter for 2 months and I have never lost connection with the software, with the USB adapter, I would have lost it between 1 to 5 times.

So my recommendation is to use the serial adapter always, and maybe use the USB adapter for a separate testing environment.

Hi.

Does this mean that I should forget trying to get the USB adaptor DS9490R working for me on Vista programming in NetBeans and buy the serial adaptor instead?

I would NOT buy the USB adapter, it gives too many problems, as Windows, and not only Vista cannot keep the connection to USB.

I know that all Vantage Pro delivered in Denmark, is delivered with the serial interface, and those who got the USB, got it changed for free.

I have been using the serial since my first note, and I have had NO disconnection since that.

Cheers

Ok.

Well I got it working now and I have seen that it looses connection now and then. I probably will go away from the USB version.

Another question: You shouldn`t by any chance have been working yourself or know someone outside KronosRobotics who have been working with the 1 wire network based on the DiosPro microcontroller and the XBee modems and been using the Dios Editor?

Do you think you can help me with a small test of the editor? It should take you about 10 minutes.

Stinger 22 - I have posted you a PM with my E-mail, but I do not know anything about what you are asking.

I have had no issues with the USB Adapter. Even nicer is the fact that it allows you to totally skip using RXTX library and related files.

It even works reliably inside a VMWARE Workstation session.

Just for the record, also the serial interface works perfect under VM-Ware workstation 6.5.

I still do not recommend the USB adapter, as all information I've got, indicates that it is unreliable.
